  • Denitrification

Denitrification is a microbial process in which nitrate (NO₃⁻) is reduced to molecular nitrogen (N₂) and nitrogen oxides, including nitrous oxide (N₂O). This process is carried out by specific microorganisms that obtain energy through these biochemical reactions. Molecular nitrogen (N₂) is biologically inert and cannot be directly utilized by plants; consequently, it is released into the atmosphere. Denitrification is an essential component of the nitrogen cycle, influencing both soil nutrient availability and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Direct Seeding (No-Till Seeding)

Direct seeding is a crop establishment method in which seeds are placed directly into the soil without prior soil tillage. This conservation tillage practice provides numerous benefits, including increased soil carbon and humus content, improved water retention in drought-prone areas, and reduced risk of soil erosion. Direct seeding contributes to improved nutrient availability, particularly when combined with cover crops, and helps reduce soil compaction. However, it may delay soil warming in spring and may require increased use of plant protection products for weed control.

  • Drainage

In agriculture, drainage refers to the removal of excess water from the soil in order to improve growing conditions for plants. It is achieved through various measures, such as the construction of drainage channels, ditches, or the installation of drainage systems. Drainage improves soil air, heat, and water relationships and contributes to the stabilisation of soil structure. It is particularly important in clay and organic soils, where it reduces the proportion of water-filled pores, thereby improving soil aeration, water balance, and structural stability. Drainage can also prevent excessive water retention and the development of soil salinity. However, excessive or overly deep drainage may lead to nutrient losses, reduced soil organic matter content, and increased risk of drought stress in plants. In wetlands and areas designated for the protection of drinking water sources, drainage activities may be restricted or prohibited in accordance with environmental protection regulations.
