  • Winterkill (Winter Injury of Crops)

Winterkill refers to damage to overwintering crops caused by low temperatures, ice formation, or prolonged snow cover. Damage may result from direct freezing injury or from physiological drought, which occurs when plants are unable to take up water from frozen soil. Although snow cover can protect crops from low temperatures, prolonged snow cover may lead to oxygen deficiency and carbon dioxide accumulation, creating favourable conditions for the development of rot diseases and potentially causing plant decline or suffocation.
